History is made - USS Indianapolis Commissioning happens for FIRST TIME in Portage, IN

Over 11,000 tickets were allocated by the US Navy for it's commissioning of the USS Indianapolis on Saturday October 26th. This is the first time Northwest Indiana has hosted the Commissioning of a US Navy vessel.

It was only appropriate to Commission the USS Indianapolis in her home state, but also to Commission her in the region where her steel came from, Northwest Indiana. The USS Indianapolis was built in the Midwest - in Marinette, WI.

Attendees included thousands of folks from around the country, including 4 remaining survivors... American Heros... of the USS Indianapolis that was sunk by Japanese on July 30, 1945.
